Silk Robes and Other Things

Silk/Satin provides for the most volatile of robes, it is also the most durable and the most useful. Let’s explore the different styles that can be achieved with silk/satin fabric.

1. Pattern Silk

Pattern silk is increasing in popularity in modern weddings, it allows the bride to have her own signature touch that can rarely be imitated. More commonly the pattern silk is worn by the bridesmaids. Print pyjamas are also very appealing. On the down side, pattern silk is more difficult to have customized, especially on the extremely busy patterns. So if you would like the names on the silk to be glaringly obvious, plain silk might be a better option for you. One good thing about pattern silk is that, unlike other silks, they usually do no vary in ‘quality’ (texture), possessing more-or-less the same lightweight density and glossy sheen.

2. Pleats and Gathers and Things

Silk is volatile and strong enough to achieve some styles that cannot be done in the other robe fabrics. With silk robes, you can have the puffiest sleeve, biggest skirt and so on. But one must be careful to keep the silk robe looking like something that belongs in the lingerie drawer rather than something one wishes to wear to a party. With silk robes, it is easier to go over-the-top….in the wrong direction . On a good day, that can mean your silk robe resembling a gorge understated wedding dress, but one wrong move and it could look like a wedding dress from the 80’s, or worse still, a ghost-like number.

3. Mixing Fabrics

Adding other more delicate fabrics can give silk the extra boost it needs. Whether this is organza or lace, a little bit goes a long way. Beaded lace trim on the ends of a short silk robe for example, can get your bridesmaids wondering what high-street designer created your magical ensemble.

3. Bridal Party

For the bridal party, silk robes are the most popular items that have been gifted to bridesmaids over the last few years. They have come to be expected, so much so that, most ladies have a few in their wardrobes, perhaps too many. Thus the pyjamas came into bridal party existence. Pyjamas were a thoughtful addition because they are useful and you can never really have too many. There are also other silk items that can be included such as: bonnets, sleep-masks and bags. These come especially handy during destination weddings. Don’t forget the gentlemen!! they can get robes/pyjamas too.

Pros and Cons

When considering robes, silk should be the first thing that comes to mind. They are often the classiest and can be the cheapest robes. There are a limitless amount of colours and patterns and can last a good amount of time after the wedding. Our advice to you, keep it delicate.
