How to Care For Your Robe

It recently came to my attention that several people wash their newly bought items of clothing before their first wear. Well lucky for you – we launder all our items before dispatching to our lovely customers. But just in case you have a need to clean or straighten your robe, read on for a few helpful tips to get your robe back in tip-top shape.

Robes are increasingly made from very delicate fabric which can easily be damaged during the cleaning process. First off, DO NOT TAKE IT TO A DRY CLEANER. Lagosian dry-cleaners are infamous for their careless handling of fragile items, so, if you have not yet worn your robe, and do not wish to have a massive iron print on it on your wedding day, it’s best you take care of it at home.

Washing

It is best you wash your robe by hand.

  1. Partially fill a large bowl with warm water. Pour in some hand-wash detergent powder.
  2. Place your tulle robe gently into the water, bottom first and allow it to sink in. Leave for two minutes. pull out and re-dunk a few times (just as you would with hair extensions). Do not scrub.
    • If your robe is lace or silk/satin you can scrub.
  3. If there is a stain put the washing powder directly onto the area and rub in with your finger. If the stain is persistent you may have to use hot water.
  4. Remove from the water after about 5 minutes or so, and transfer to clean water. Repeat dunking process for another 2 minutes.
  5. Remove from water but Do not ring, this will create wrinkles in the tulle.
    • For Lace/silk/satin fabrics you can ring before drying.
  6. Air dry straight, flat if possible.

After this process, your tulle robe should be ready to wear straight from the washing line. The washing and hanging should have straightened the wrinkles.

if your robe is still wrinkled you might have to straighten it.

Straightening Your Robe

a. Tulle

If your robe is made of tulle, Do Not Iron unless you are an expert because this can quickly and easily go wrong.

To straighten your tull robe, hang it up and steam using a handheld steamer.

Alternatively, you can place on a hanger and hang upright for 3 days before you plan to wear it. the wrinkles will drop. However this depends on how soft the tulle is. Different types of nets react differently to each of these process.

b. Satins and other fabrics

Once you satin robe is dry, place a damp separation cloth on top and iron as normal, making sure not to leave the fabric too long on any particular area to avoid burning.
